In the heart of Sicily, picturesque position, surrounded by Iblei mounts on one side and by Erei mounts on the other, in a landscape characterized through calcareous rocks, the town of Caltagirone has been famous since very antique times for the valuable industry of majolica and the manufactured articles are visible everywhere along the streets of the old town centre in the many handicraft shops. The Arabian domination corresponds to a crucial period in the history of the town. It was in that period that the topographical profile, characterized through narrow lanes, took shape which the town has conserved till now and thanks to Arabians the local ceramists refined and learned new techniques such as the realization of polychromatic ceramics glazed on glass. Among the Islamic still intact lanes the following stand out: the famous stairs of Chiesa Santa Maria del Monte, the Museum of ceramics and the Norman Dom. Twenty minutes away from the town it is possible to see the mosaic works in Piazza Armerina and the excavations of Morgantina. |
