Travellers Reviews

We did not see the directions to the property published on the website, however we may not have paid attention to them since we hired a driver to pick us up at Malpensa Airport in Milan. We arrived quite early in the day, around 11am, and to our delight, our suite was ready and available for us to check into. It was so nice to be able to freshen up before heading out to see the town! ... A place we would definitely recommend to friends! ... This property and area (Orta San Giulio, Lago d'Orta) are truly gems which are sadly unknown to most travelers to this region of Italy. We visited 4 of the lakes and this whole experience in Orta San Giulio(including Villa Crespi)was just as special although altogether different from Lake Como and Villa Feltrinelli on Lake Garda, areas and properties much more known. We did find that hoteliers 'in the know' in northern Italy do know Villa Crespi, and speak very highly of it. We paid a fraction of the price at Villa Crespi than we did in Lake Como (Villa Serbelloni) and Villa Feltrinelli in Lake Garda. The dinner at Villa Crespi was superb! ... The warm and friendly staff deserves ample praise and appreciation. They were professional in every way, yet made us feel like we were family. We were truly sorry to leave them, and after just a few days, we felt like we had made new friends. They could not do enough for us to ensure that we had a wonderful visit. ... An intimate gem in a quiet,'off-the-beaten' track' location of Orta San Guilio... elegant, but unpretentious with a warm, and professional staff. You will vow to return for a longer visit. A truly magical town and property!

A very friendly reception at the end of a very long day ... Can't wait to go back ... a very simple drive from the hotel upto Mottarone, one of the most beautiful rides and views in the entire region ... Idyllic, a very special place to stay with a very special person

We were actually offered a free upgrade to an executive suite but chose the original room we had booked as it had a balcony.
Spectacular building, the only downside was the fact it is very near the busy road and our balcony looked onto this. ... some areas could do with some maintenance work. The fountain outside the front could be made much nicer. Our balcony furniture was plastic- we both thought it should be metal like the rest of the hotels gardens furniture. ... The building made the price of the room seem fairly priced, and the rooms were very grand but facilities and upkeep of areas of the hotel were probably less than you would expect for a hotel of that cost. ... Magical building full of history, rooms very grand but in need of a little TLC.

Include the quality of food in the restaurant. It is very good. ... Like sleeping in a palace.

Unfortunately two massive cranes being used for filming a commercial spot blocked the entire front entrance of the hotel. ... As mentioned above, the presence in the hotel of a film crew and all their machinery did not make for the wonderful experience we expected but the management were understanding and compensated us very generously for the inconvenience ... A mystical moorish palace near a jewel of a lake.

Despite the fact the Michelin starred restaurant at the hotel was closed that day, the reception at the hotel was still more than willing to agree to have a sandwich, glass of wine and a hot drink prepared for us as we had arrived after a long journey, it was late, pouring with rain and we were starving! This simple hospitality got top marks from us! ... The staff member on reception was very friendly and informative about restaurants and bars in Orta San Giulio - and her evaluations were very accurate. ( We had been disappointed to find the starred restaurant at the hotel was closed that day) Everyone we spoke to at the Villa Crespi was courteous, friendly and helpful...as one would expect at a hotel of this quality! (however, as we found elsewhere, this doesn't always prove to be the case!) The hotel was a little shabby in some places but is clearly a 'work in progress' for its young team, and we would happily go back and would recommend it to others. ... Perhaps make clearer the opening hours of the obviously renowned restaurant - we only discovered these from the Michelin Red Guide on the journey there, though perhaps they were on your site and I just missed them. ... Fascinating and historic building, perhaps a little eccentric in some of its design and not quite yet restored to a 5 star standard in all rooms and public areas, but well worth staying at. A very friendly welcome. Would have liked to try the restaurant!

Hotel very easy to find due to its distictinctive features! ... A very magical experience, we expected a high standard from the descriptions but it exceeded our expectations. ... We already have - out of this world. A definate place to revisit.

The restaurant, wine list and food was excellent. Although it was mentioned on the web site, I was not fully aware of it before I was there. ... Phantastic, very original, a little bit weird.

Restaurant services were not satisfactory at all. Our request for additional room service was initially denied and we had to have a 30 minute conversation with the receptionist to have our room cleaned properly!
