Very close to the apartment there is "Piazza Maggiore". It is a big square bordered by medieval buildings, including the unfinished "Basilica of San Petronio". In the square stands the fountain to Neptune by "Giovanni da Bologna". From the Piazza lead miles of porticoed streets (25 miles to be exact). Sheltering beneath the porticoes are shops to suit every taste, from dusty book shops to exclusive boutiques, all the top Italian designers are represented. There are many antique shops in Bologna, some specialising in certain periods, the pottery of "Emilia Romagna" is wonderful, there are several outlets in Bologna.

There is a
daily market (except Sundays) in "Via Pescherie Vecchie" where an amazing array of fresh fish and vegetables can be bought. Every second week-end of the month an antiques market is held in the beautiful "Piazza Santo Stefano", this is an open air market where stall holders display and sell their treasures. Other sites of interest include: the Gothic Cathedral, the national Picture Gallery, the Basilica of Santa Stefano, the Archiginnasio. Bologna is world renown for it's gastronomy, visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to either pizzerias, osterias, trattorias and restaurants.
