Palazzo Terranova is an exquisite small luxury country house hotel located on the fabulous hillside of North East Umbria near the Tuscan border. This marvellous hotel was created thanks to the passion of Sarah for Italian life, began during the days spent at Chelsea art school in London. When she married in 1966 Johnny Townsend, they decided to come in Tuscany, near Cortona thanks to their love of Italy. |
There they restored their first farmhouse and then in the late 80's Sarah and Johnny discovered the dilapidated country house that was to become Palazzo Terranova. Originally a stunning 18th century Palazzo, the house was neglected and left uninhabited for over 100 years. In 1989, Sarah and Johnny Townsend stumbled upon the wreck, and dedicated the next five years to meticulously restoring the Palazzo back to its former glory. |
When the Townsends saw for the first time the Palazzo, it was the shell of a once beautiful Casa Padronale built by a noble Umbrian family to be used for harvest festivals. However 300 years of neglect had reduced it to a collapsing pile of stone. The roof was replaced and the top three floors of the house were virtually rebuilt. Inside the original architectural features, carved niches, original doors and terracotta tile floors were all restored. |
Now Palazzo Terranova is one of the best hotels in Italy and Sarah continues to pay a great attention to every aspect of its running. Palazzo Terranova is an idyllic retreat, offering peace and tranquillity in an environment far removed from everyday cares. It is also a place for those who appreciate the good things in life-friends, delicious food, comfort and wellbeing treatments. |
