 Anacapri is a renowned and exclusive tourist resort, boasting elegant, comfortable tourist accommodation structures. The many superb art treasures here are also well-known. Among these the churches of San Michele and Santa Sofia should be mentioned, the latter a medieval construction, as well as villa S. Michele, built by Axel Munthe, Swedish doctor and writer, on the spot where there was a chapel dedicated to the saint, and the Barbarossa Castle, about 400 metres above sea level, where an extraordinarily beautiful view over the Gulf of Naples can be admired. Built at the beginning of the eleventh century, the castle was sacked in the sixteenth century by the pirate Khair ad-din, called Barbarossa, from whom it takes its name. Nowadays, apart from some ruins, only the keep remains, the seat of a bird-watching and research centre run by the Swedish foundation honouring Axel Munthe's name. |
