Click to view the map | Situated on the left hand-side of the Bormida river, Acqui Terme boasts antique origins. It's position in the heart of the Valle Bormida, is an area which was once inhabited in the pre-historic era by the Liguri Statielli tribe. The most important centre of this tribe was Caristum, which was conquered in the IIC a.C. by the roman army led by the consul Marco Popilio Lenate. Due to the abundance in therapeutic water and it's favourable strategic position, Rome decided to convert the town into one of the most important spa centres, aiming also to create a direct connection between the north and south. Due to this an important road was realized which joined Tortona to Vado Ligure called the "Aemliia Scauria". |
