Perugia: The chief town of Umbria, is a city of outstanding artistic interest. Two periods stand out in its history: the Etruscan and the medieval-early Renaissance period, until the 16th century. From the former, remains of walls, arches and hypogea survive. From the latter, imposing religious and civil buildings as well, in several places, as the old urban system. In summer and autumn the city is the venue of important theatrical and musical events. In the middle of the main square there is "Fontana Maggiore". It is within easy reach from Relais San Clemente: only 20 minutes by train and only 10 minutes by car. |
Events: Modern days Umbria is a land of strong ancient traditions alive with cultural activity; it is a land where popular festivals with remote origins and recently introduced artistic and cultural events are threaded together across the year like a string of pearls. These events are another way that Umbria has of expressing two aspects of its reality: its ancient spirit and its modern creativity. If the faces of cities permit us to read the various traces left by centuries of history, so folklore provides the key to deciphering fragments of the same historical fresco handed down by popular memory. In the folkloristic and religious festivals we can see pagan fragments, Christian devotions, elements from the time of free cities and so onwards through the ages gradually up to the present. |
