History: Originally the home of the wealthy Sasso family, Palazzo Sasso has strong historic connections with artists, music lovers and celebrities alike. A famous member of the Sasso family was Brother Gerardo founder of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. As a fashionable society hotel of the 1950's, it entertained such luminaries as Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini. Ravello is a quiet little town. Its charm and attractiveness are due to the contrast between its position - the town having been boldly laid out on a rugged stretch of highland - and its enticing surroundings gleaming with a myriad of bright colours, the contrast between its rough narrow streets and lanes the wealth of its works of art. Although the earliest settlement is believed to date back to the 6th century AD, when a group of Romans sought refuge here in their flight from the vandalic destructions of the Huns, Goths, Visigoths, the city proper was found no earlier than around the 9th century. |
