The area was first discovered by Greek sailors who came from the east, they first saw it when the place was lit up by the sun and therefore called it Leukos, which means white. The rest of the name comes from the landing of S. Pietro from Palestina. He changed the name of the city, thus dedicating it to the Virgin.
