The old section of the hotel was a private villa built in 1889 by the aristocratic Costa Family coming from Corsica. In 1905 a new wing was built as a hotel and managed for several years by the Guindani Family from Santa Margherita Ligure. Then in 1910 the building was further extended to its present state. |
On april 16th, 1922 the German Minister for Foreign Affairs, Walter Rathenau, and the Russian Commissioner for Foreign Affairs, G. V. Cicerin, met here in the hotel and signed the famous "Treaty of Rapallo". Germany accorded the USSR de jure recognition (the first such recognition extended to the Soviet government), and the two signatories mutually canceled all prewar debts and renounced war claims. |
The treaty enabled the German army, through secret agreements, to produce and perfect in the USSR weapons forbidden by the Treaty of Versailles. At present several high level meetings are still held in the same room known as "Sala del Trattato", lavishly decorated in Pompeian style, where the guests can admire the original furniture and feel the same atmosphere of the past. One of the most famous guest of the hotel was Queen Elena of Savoy along with other well known representatives of the aristocracy of the time. |
Famous writers and artists, like Pirandello and Eleonora Duse were regular guests of the hotel. In 1956 the Vitaliano family acquired the property and enriched the Imperiale Palace with valuable antiques and pieces of art. the family owned the hotel until 1969, when it was purchased by the Fabbri Family, a well known Italian Publisher. |
