Hotel Europa affords a panoramic vista across the waterfront in the pictureque village of Lerici. With its natural beauty and environmentally sensitive development, Lerici offers its visitors some of the most beautiful scenery of Liguria. These are some suggestions about what to do on Lerici and surroundings: - The Seal Museum (Museo del Sigillo): opened in La Spezia in 2000 and is located in the art building "Lucio R. Rosaia" ( a neo-Gothic building on the ancient Via del Prione). The pieces on display were selected with the collaboration of the secret Vatican Archives, the Archives of the forbidden city of Beijim, and the Maisch Lalique in Paris. According to a number of European, American, and Asian experts, it is a unique exposition of its kind. With its collection of seals spanning centuries, the museum is a gem waiting to be discovered. - S. Giorgio Castle: the first evidence of San Giorgio Castle dates back to the 14th century; it is the foundation of the tower and is the only original part that can be seen today. It was expanded in 1443 and later in 1554. Now it is the monument that best represents all of the historical events that have taken place in La Spezia. Downstairs in the castle there are displays of life in the region from the Pleistocene to the Roman Ages; upstairs there are Roman treasures from the area of Luni. - "Amedeo Lia Museum": it is located in La Spezia and houses paintings from the 13th to the 18th centuries and a larger collection of ancient, medieval, and modern scriptures and objects. The Museum is housed in the ancient church and friar convent of Saint Francis of Paola, which dates back to the first quarter of the 18th century. - The Technical Naval Museum: located inside the military shipyard of La Spezia, is a veritable treasure-trove of vestiges that recall the Italian Navy's military history. Over the centuries, with the inclusion of ancient Savoy collections, it has turned into a collection of valuable relics that reconstruct the history of navigation. - Municipal Ethnographic Museum: situated in Via Cortatone, La Spezia, this museum offers an interesting synthesis of the popular culture of Lunigiana from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The museum also houses some important ethnographic collections of non-European cultures. - The Sea Fortress: recently turned into the Centre for Maritime Civilisation and Education, the Fortress houses exhibition areas and training workshops in underwater archaeology and maritime science. The fortress, located on the little island of Palmaria in front of Portovenere, is a beautiful example of a fortified military naval building. - "Calice Castle": this ancient castle houses an environmental education centre; a Museum of the Science of Honey Making (the only one in Liguria and the second one in Italy); the Art Gallery of David Beghe, a disciple of Bertini and Vattorta; and the small "P. Rosa" Museum. Excursions: Don't miss the opportunity to take an excursion to the Cinque Terre, which runs through the magnificent stretch of coast between the Mesco and the Montenero headlands. Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso are the five towns that are waiting to reveal their ancient secrets. How to get there: by ferry from Lerici with Navigazione "Il Golfo dei Poeti" or by car, driving past La Spezia for about 40 minutes in the direction Cinque Terre. Another place not to be missed is the charming village of Portovenere, already well-known at the time of the Maritime Republics. Its beauty gave inspiration to the verses of such poets and writers as Byron, Shelley, and D.H. Lawrence. The ancient village of San Terenzo, situated on the western point of Lerici, was founded in the 12th century as a little fishing community. It remains in tact as a typical Ligurian village with its multi-coloured houses closely knit together to form a sort of fortified town. At the eastern end of the village stands the castle, which protected the population from the frequent pirate raids. Last but not least: Visit the largest aquarium in Europe! With only a 60-minute drive from Lerici (take the motorway for Genoa), you can immerse yourselves in this wonderful underwater paradise of animals and plants from all over the world.
Sport: Lerici area offers courses at all levels in canoeing, sailing, kayaking, scuba diving, and other water sports. Other possibilities for sports minded include the charming Golf Club Marigola with nine-hole course, an indoor-outdoor tennis complex with five courts and two swimming pools (one of which is covered and heated for year round use) all of which are located minutes from the hotel! Trekking enthusiasts don't want to miss the opportunity to walk along the Italian Alpine Club tracks that wind throughout the area: in the Cinque Terre from Riomaggiore to Monterosso; from Portofino to San Fruttuoso and Camogli; and on the hills of Lerici, along the trails of the Caprione and the Corvo going as far as Tellaro and Montemarcello. |
