The Hotel Bouganville is located in the centre of Picerno, The origins of this small cozy villace date back to the II century B.C., as some ruins and some tombs show. The whole village was seriously damaged by the earthquake of 1857, which also stroke other villages nearby. A characteristic of the old centre is the presence of palaces with beautiful portals. In the middle of Picerno's lanes there is the mediaeval Tower, with a cylindrical shape, that overlooks the centre. The Church of the Annunziata, of the XIV century, has a stone facade in late-imperial style, with reliefs representing an amphora, a woman and a family. On the central altar is a small temple, supported by 2 statues and decorated with angels and puttoes. The Church of San Nicola was built on the ruins of the mediaeval Castle in the XVIII century. Its inner part has one nave and two aisles, in it, there are an altar-piece, of the XV century, and some wooden masterpieces. This is one of the centres in Basilicata, together with Potenza, Tito, Pignola and Trecchina, where the Gaul-Italian dialect is spoken. This probably depends on the migration (XIII century) of some peoples coming from areas in the North of Italy (Monferrato), that amalgamated together with the local communities. (G. Rohlfs). At only 19 km from the Hotel Bouganville you will find: Potenza built on a hill more than 800 metres high and it was inhabited since the IV century B.C. It was probably built as a consequence of the destruction of the close village of Serra di Vaglio, whose ruins are still visible. Its good geographic position made it an important crossroads in the Mediterranean, with the benefits of the Greeks influence. Under the Roman domination, Potenza was first a prefecture, then an important municipality. S. Vito's Bridge was built around that time (248-305 B.C.) and so was the Roman villa that the Malvaccaro Mosaic belonged to. This town has a beautiful old centre with several churches, the Cathedral, the Castle Tower, and the Museum. Every year in May an event called 'Sfilata dei Turchi' (Turks' Parade) takes place. This is one of the centres in Basilicata, together with Tito, Pignola, Vaglio and Trecchina, where the Gaul-Italian dialect is spoken. This probably depends on the migration (XIII century) of some peoples coming from areas in the North of Italy (Monferrato), that amalgamated together with the local communities (G. Rohlfs).
- Pignola Pantano Lake - 25 Km:
This village is on a hill, at a few miles from Potenza. Its name was quoted for the first time in the XII century, as 'Vineolae', from the Latin word 'vinea' vineyard. The Main Church was rebuilt in the XVIII century on a previous building. It has only one nave with eight chapels on its sides; inside, there are several canvases, three of which were painted by Pietrafesa. Near the village there is the Church of the Madonna del Pantano; inside, there are a wooden statue of the 'Madonna col Bambino', decorated in pure gold, and two oil canvases by Filippo Mangere (1700). In the neighbourhood of Pignola, near the Pantano Lake, there is the 'Natural Reserve' and the WWF Oasis. Because it is very close to the Rifreddo Wood, which is a summer and winter holiday resort, and to the Sellata skiing resort, Pignola is a major holiday place. The so called 'Uglia' is a typical event in Pignola.
- Brindisi di Montagna - The Grancia Park -  40 km:
Brindisi di Montagna used to be overlooked by its Castle, built around the XIII century and destroyed by a earthquake in 1694, of which only very little is left. The cultural heritage of this village is mostly in its old centre, with its churches and the 'Municipio', where some paintings by Donato Allegretti, an artist born in Brindisi, are kept. In the Main Church of S. Nicola, built in the XIV century and rebuilt in 1595, there is an altar in multicoloured marble and behind the statue of S. Nicola can be found. On the right of the transept there is the wooden statue of the Madonna del Rosario, of the XVIII century, while on the left a canvas representing the 'Madonna del Carmine'. In Brindisi there is also the beautiful Church of Maria Santissima delle Grazie (1595). The 'Parco della Grancia', which has been created very recently, is an important attraction for tourists.
- Castemezzano e Pietrapertosa - 50 km:
This village, mounted amongst the Dolomiti Lucane, offers evocative sceneries. The ancient centre used to be a powerful Longobard stronghold. In the Main Church (XIII century) there is a wonderful statue of the' Madonna col Bambino', called 'Madonna dell'Olmo' (Madonna of the Elm) of the XIV century. In the 'Madonna delle Grazie' Chapel there is a beautiful Baroque altar. The ruins of the walls and a flight of steps of the Castle of 'Castrum Medianum' are still visible. This territory is ideal for excursions through evocative scenery, such as the Valley of the Stream Caperrino, which is the boundary between this village and Pietrapertosa. Along the Stream there are the remains of some old mills. For its natural characteristics and for the luxurious vegetation that surrounds it, Castelmezzano is the destination for many tourists, most of all in summer.
- Pignola - Stellata Ski Station - 40 km:
About 20 km far from Potenza, in the Abriola area, it is located in the tourist resort of Sellata-Pierfaone. Its wonderful position with an extraordinary view and its equipment make it one of the most skiing resorts in the region. Sellata can be reached from Potenza through a direct road that, passing through Pignola, goes up to the height of 1,255 metres. In this area there are two chair lifts called 'Pierfaone' (1,500 metres long) that serve rather challenging slopes. Higher up there is a cross-country skiing area. The ski station is plunged in the wonderful green frame of the Basilicata woods, that reach the top of the Volturino Mountain and Fossa Cupa and Arioso springs, towards Pietra del Tasso and the famous Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Saraceni.
