The Piazza Maggiore, one of the most beautifull in Italy, is the home of most of city's monuments. It is an enclose square, graced by arcade, windows and battlements, dating from the 16th century when the construction of the Archiginnasio, the first seat of the University, was started.
The "Basilica of San Petronio" built on the initiative of the Comune at the end of the 14th century to celebrate the city's regaining its freedom, the Basilica is still today one of the largest religious building in the Cattolic World.
The Towers: In the Middle Ages, one could count more than 200 towers in the city. They were conceived as bastions when the town was torn apart by rivality involving Guelphs and Ghibellines. The town has always been symbolised by its two leading towers: Asinelli and Garisenda. |
