| Loacted between the Amalfi coast to the west, and the Cilento coast to the southeast, Salerno benefits an ideal location and warm climate for most of the year. The city proudly housed Europe's first Medical School in the 9th Century.Today all that remains are the 'Gardens of Minerva', perched in the Old City, where medicinal plants were once grown. Salerno has maintained many of its old traditions. This is most evident in the Old Town, where Salerno has kept much of its original character. Once inhabited by fishermen, today it has undergone extensive restructuration. The Cathedral is well worth a visit. It houses Saint Matthew's relics, and is one of the only romanesque church in Italy to have a four gates style porch. A walk along the 'Corso'in the centre of the Old City, leads one past designer clothes stores and fashion bars where one can enjoy a genuine Italian cocktail. |
