La Morra The ancient heart of La Morra lies at the top of a hill, where in older times a castle stood. Today the castle has completely disappeared, and the only reminder of it is the base of the Municipal Tower, built in its current form in 1720. Two religious buildings overlook the same square. In addition to several private late mediaeval and 18th century buildings, the remains of the ramparts of the mediaeval wall that protected the castle can still be seen. Over the centuries this wall has, in a certain sense, dictated the town's urban expansion. On the road towards Grinzane Cavour, halfway up the hill is the ex-abbey of Our Lady of the Annunciation, an ancient monastic building that boasts a bell tower built between the 13th and 14th centuries.
La Morra, and particularly its historic town centre, atop one of the many hills that are dotted around the Langhe area, still preserves a mediaeval layout, in the shape of a fan. It is very likely that the first settlements date back a long way and its records mention an important development in the Roman era. The name "villa Murre" appeared for the first time in documents that date back to the early 13th century. The following century, the feud was bought by the Falletti family and from 1631 onwards, with the Peace of Cherasco, became part of the Savoy estate. |
