The palace used to be the headquarters of Toro Assicurazioni. When it was built in the period following the Second World War, "Palazzo Toro" was cited in the most important books on architecture. It was an exemplary building both for its conception and for its structural features, and pictures of it appeared everywhere. Modern, faced in stone, and with a great number of windows (one for each internal door, it was said), Palazzo Toro was a jewel of the Decker architectural firm, one of the city's most in view at the time, and the best technicians and craftsmen of those years were involved in building it. |
It was one of the city's first buildings to have lifts with automatic doors and air conditioning.Thought through in every detail, it had an internal well to provide a regular source of cooling water for the air conditioning system, and even paper shades placed between two panes of glass that could be manoeuvred from inside, according to a style in vogue in Nordic countries. The hotel is a balanced blend between Contemporary and Art Deco. |
Fittingly, the leitmotif of the Golden Palace is gold. Prized woods and gleaming lacquers, gilt and burnished brass, light and metal, inspired by Olympic themes, are the unifying elements between the communal areas, the rooms and the furnishings. The imposing austerity of the lobby features the refined forms and materials of the original design, from the marble of the floor and doorways to the impressive luminous glass cupola to the furnishings in burnished brass, onyx and marble. |
Each room, each decorative element, was designed with great attention to detail and the choice of materials. And giving a symbolic welcome, to the new hotel and to the "new" and ever more dynamic Turin, is the large stone monolith, an extraordinary example of video art. A work by the video sculptor Fabrizio Plessi**, realised exclusively for the new Turin THI, that alludes to the noble metals, movement and energy. The guiding thread between the rooms and spaces of the Golden Place is gold, in countless interpretations of shapes and materials. |
The warm golden note of the precious mother-of-pearl coverings of the reception counters and the porter's desk is juxtaposed with the dark brown of the crocodile-effect leather of the welcome desk. The furniture, spare and elegant, is made of exclusive quality materials, set with objects of unstinting originality, while an unusual shell fireplace extends an invitation to a cosy read in the library. |
The authentic gold flows and strong colour contrasts of two original works by Giovanni Lombardini*** open partition-like to enable enjoyment of the plasma monitors placed on the walls, in the American bar and in the rooms off the lobby. Aesthetics and functionality, artistic forms and creativity that blend and exalt technology. In service and support of a facility of yesterday, redesigned for the needs of the most modern and refined comfort. Functional, and very classy. |
