The old Loreto road, a natural extension of "Corso Orientale" (today "Corso Venezia"), was a white straight stretch leading into the country, lined by beautiful poplar trees, often described by the Italian writer Manzoni. After 1881, with Italian Unity and increasing industrialization, a large number of migrants moved from the country-side to the industrial areas, increasing the need for new houses. The building trade responded by spreading beyond the Spanish walls, towards the north-east. In the same year, the "Lazzaretto" began to be demolished and the first of many building scandals of this new Italian period broke out. The so-called "Law of Resegone" was infringed, which forbade the builders to construct buildings so high as to hide the view of the Lecco mountains from the people of Milan, the town spread beyond the ramparts. The new main street took shape and its appearance rapidly changed. In the map of Milan published by the Geographic Institute De Agostini for the 1906 International Exhibition, the main street already appears with its present name "Corso Buenos Aires". It is almost all divided into lots, with new streets and quarters; their history now becoming part of the history of Milan and, in some cases national history. On 8th July 1876 the "hyppoway" was inaugurated which connected Milan to Monza. The first buildings to be erected on the "Lazzaretto" area, were important construction works: Palazzo Luraschi, for example (nowadays in Corso Buenos Aires n. 1), was one of the first buildings to be built with reinforced concrete in Italy. |
