Modena and its monuments The Cathedral: it was begun in 1099 and consecrated in 1184. this cathedral represents one of the greatest Romanic works in Europe, both for Lanfranco's architecture and for Wiligelmo magnificent sculpture. Beneath the rose window is the main portal sculpted by Wiligelmo, who also made the four marble slabs depicting stories from the book of Genesi. The Ghirlandina Tower: already built to the fifth floor in 1169, was completed in 1319. The square base section is the same age as the cathedral and is in Romanesque style, while the octagonal and pyramidal upper parts are later and more clearly Gothic in taste. The Ghiraldina, which perhaps takes its name from the two rows of garland-like balustrading which crown it, is proudly viewed by the people of Modena as the symbol of their city; it didn't only have the religious function deriving from its status as cathedral tower, but was also a defensive tower.
The Town Hall: this L-shaped building, running along the north and east sides of Piazza Grande, incorporates Mediaeval buildings whose exteriors were plastered over in the XVI century. The Clock Tower was built in XV century.
A great stairway leads to interesting rooms: the Chamber of Elected where is kept the Stolen Bucket (Secchia Rapita), a bizarre trophy which the Modena troops took from those of Bologna after the Battle of Fossalta in the Middle Ages: this fact inspired the comic epic poem entitled "Secchia Rapita" by Modenese poet Alessandro Tassoni. The Ducal Palace: situated in Piazza Roma, built by Francesco I in 1634, to a design by B. Avanzini on the remains of Obizzo's castle, it was, for two century, the residence of the Court of Este Family. Now it is the headquarter of the main's Italy Military Academy, The most spectacular rooms are the Hall of Honour and the eighteenth-century Gold Room. The Duca Palace can be visited on request.
Ducal Gardens: after leaving the Ducal Palace one can reach the Public Gardens and their palace, constructed between 1634 and 1656 to the design of G. Vigarani. Today the building is used to house exhibitions for the public. The garden, partly reconstructed on the original ducal layout, offers the visitor entering it from Corso Canalgrande the impression of stately, opulent elegance, seen through the wrought iron elements of the gate by G.B.Malagoli, a local artist and craftsman of the XVIII century.
Museums: originally built as a military barracks, this eighteenth century building has since 1883 been the seat of Modena's most important historical and artistic institutions; the Estense Gallery, the Estense Library, the Estense Epigraphic Museum, the Municipal Historical Archives, the Civic Museum of Risorgimento and the Civic Museum. On the ground floor is the Civic Museum of Risorgimento (1893) which illustrate the historical process of liberation and unification of the Italian state.
Modena and the Land of Cars The town and its province, which includes maranello and Fiorano, hav always been considered the international capital of the speed. Here were born Ferrari, Maserati, De Tomaso, Bugatti, Lambirghini: racing and luxury cars, which have become part of history, turning into "collectable items" and bringing the name of Modena all over the world. Within a few kilometres, there are several car museums: the Galleria Ferrari, the repository of the myth which, among vintage cars relics, tells the story of Ferrari and its founder. Further more the Museum Stanguellini, the Panini Collection where are the Maserati Cars, De Tomaso Collection and the lamborghini museum.
Modena and its Gastronomy Modena is known worldwide as synonymous with good food. The ideal modenese menù cannot but open with the delicious dressed pork meats, first among all the Modenese Ham. The place of honour among first courses goes to the Tortellini, small pasta squares folded over a filling of pork, ham and Parmiggiano Reggiano cheese. For the main course, Zampone, a mixture of minced pork meats. Not to be missed is the Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, suave elixir which no other cuisine in the world can boast about. A good portion of Parmiggiano reggiano cheese must not be lacking either, perhaps cut into slivers with a few drops of traditional balsamic vinegar sprinkled on top. This lavish lunch will, of course, be accompanied by a nice glass of lambrusco, a sparkling wine, ruby red in colour and the ideal companion for the local cuisine. And Then there's the fruit: the exquisite Vignola cherries. To round it all off, there are many dessert specialities to choose from: Bensone, a "home-made" cake, Zuppa Inglese, similar to English trifle, and Amaretti. As digestive a glass of Nocino, a tasty liqueur abtained from green walnuts. |
