Itineraries in Piedmont: Langhe, Roero and Monferrato area.
Piedmont is the region of art, culture, wine and gastronomy. These are our suggestions of visits...

Castles to discover
A remarkable characteristic of the Langhe territory is certainly the imposing presence of castles and medieval mansions. A tour including these castles could be interesting in order to rediscover the history of these places which are part of Italian history. The Castle of Barolo, where the Marquess Juliette Colbert named this world-famous red wine after the name of the village she loved so much. In the ancient cellars of the castle you can visit the Regional Enoteca of Barolo. This prestigious wine shop offers a comprehensive selection of Barolo of different vintages and producers. The village is situated in a particular natural hollow cultivated with vineyards and fruit trees, this village is the centre of production of the most noble Italian wine: Barolo, "the king of wines, the wine of kings". The Barolo castle certainly deserves a visit because it is one of the few in which you can find the original well preserved furniture. There is also a precious library in which we can still perceive the presence of Silvio Pellico who found refuge and peace here when he was finally freed from the Spielberg prison. The castle has been greatly and ably restored, so it manifests its original charm. Guided tours show the tourists the magnificent halls with beautiful fresco paintings and also the museum of agricultural civilisation, on the second floor of the castle.
The imposing fortress of Serralunga d' Alba. The medieval village is perched on a hilltop: step back in time and wander round the cobbled narrow streets. It is built around its mighty fortress, astonishes because of the tranquillity that can be perceived in its little lanes covered with ancient stones. The houses of these old lanes have not been substantially modified or transformed by time but they have been wisely and respectfully kept; some of them are even as ancient as the fortress.

Barolo Itinerary
Through the sinuous hills of the Bassa Langa (lower area of the Langhe), you can proceed along beautiful panoramic roads from which you can admire incredible landscapes, admire sumptuous castles and well-groomed vineyards where the prestigious "King of Wines" is produced. The large winemaking estate of Fontanafredda, where Vittorio Emanuele II's hunting lodge is. Seven million of a range of high-quality red, white and sparkling wines are produced yearly from the estate. The gentle hills that surround Fontanafredda are covered with vineyards that are well-known for their prestige and cultivated according to the most updated technologies.

Barbaresco Itinerary
You go along the pleasant hills and enchanting landscapes, sceneries which are popular worldwide, places where the wine produced from the nebbiolo species of vine becomes Barbaresco (the prince of red vintages) ageing in durmast barrels. Itinerario del Barbaresco. Villages: Neive, Barbaresco, Treiso, San Rocco Senodelvio.

Alta Langa Itinerary
The countryside of the southern Alta Langa (high Langa) is very suggestive, the hills are higher and instead of vineyards you will find conifers, hazelnut trees and chestnut trees. It is the most savage and rough area of the Langhe, which is described in the excellent literary masterpieces of Pavese and Fenoglio. Langhe and Roero are territories of easy access, they can be rapidly reached by motorway, but it is by going along the little side roads that you can discover the deep charm of this area and of its rich countryside and more than a hundred towns and villages. We are going to mention just some of those typical towns by proposing a hypothetical itinerary which will wet your appetite and give you a taste of the magic of those precious places.

Alba
Alba is the capital of the Langhe: it is the municipality with the highest population and has a millenary history. The ancient town centre still has a typical medieval structure with many towers and historical buildings. It is rich in both sacred and profane beautiful buildings. It is worth visiting the Duomo dedicated to San Lorenzo with its red brick facade; the Do' house, which is decorated with fired brick friezes, and stands on the "Maestra" road; the barocco style Church of Santa Caterina and that of San Giovanni Battista in which a precious painting by Macrino that has been recently restored is kept.  Among the most prestigious buildings we must point out the Town Hall and the Teatro Sociale, one of the best examples of architectural neo-classicism that has been recently restored in a splendid and intelligent manner.

Cherasco
The fascinating medieval small town of Cherasco is not far away from Bra, and you will surely fall in love with it at first sight .In fact Napoleon, having admired the buildings, the Visconti's castle and the magnificent Churches, having also toured the bastions from the Bevedere arch proceeding along the foundations of the 16th century walls, decreed the town "the most beautiful ridge of Italy".

The Land of Taste...
Piedmont is the land of taste where you can quietly discover and enjoy traditional dishes of cuisine that has preserved its good ancient tastes. The dishes of the peasant tradition are simple but savoury, the freshness of genuine country products is their essence. It is useless to deny that gastronomy is still nowadays the irresistible attraction of this generous land. This reputation is implemented by the extraordinary quality of wines that go together on the table with traditional delicatessen produce.

Truffle
The white truffle has become a true treasure sought-after by gourmets and connoisseurs. It is the "king" of the table in this area particularly during the autumn period. Truffle can give a very particular flavour to every dish and its intensive aroma characterises every preparation. The tradition of the Alba cuisine is to serve truffles raw and in thin slices. Truffle is excellent with tajarin pasta, on rice dishes, on fondue, with eggs, raw meat or on pore mushroom salads. The white truffle is also famous world-wide because of its secret peculiarity of being endowed with a magical aphrodisiac power. Legend or truth?

Asti and the Monferrato Area....
The Monferrato is a hilly territory which offers sights of vineyards alternated with woods and punctuated with farmsteads. Country houses, towers and ruins crown almost every rise. The multitude of Churches and Chapels awake a mystic and architectural charm. The Asti province has just one big town, the chief town, it is in fact an almost totally hilly green area. Asti is an artistic town and an important wine production centre. It deserves a visit in order to discover its ancient medieval palaces and the historical suburb. The sacred buildings are magnificent: The Cathedral, one of the most important Gothic Churches in the zone, the San Secondo Collegiate Church, the San Pietro and San Paolo Rotunda, which is a complex constituted by a XII century Palace and the San Pietro Baptistery which has a particular octagonal shape. The folklore in Asti is rich in hints and traditions which have deep roots in medieval history and rural culture.

Turin: capital of Baroque art
You will be astonished by the daring lines of a style that, from the late 17th century, transformed Turin into one of the capitals of Baroque art. agnificent Royal Residences and imposing church domes bear witness to the greatness of architects such as Guarino Guarini, Filippo Juvarra and Ascanio Vitozzi.
