The history of Borgo di Lanciano is closely tied to the vicissitudes of Lanciano Castle, built in the XIV century by Giovanni da Varano, and to its last owner, Princess Maria Sofia Giustiniani Bandini. A pleasant walk will lead you, through the wood, to the Castle, which now, after a significant restructuring process, has reopened its gates to the public. The historical building, moreover, houses the Museum Maria Sofia Giustiniani Bandini, the biggest and the most peculiar museum in the Net of Civic and Diocese Museums on Camerino's territory.

The Templars:
Legends of Templars characterize and increase the charm of the place: a veil of mystery has always surrounded their story. Their origins date back to 1118, when it was created in France a little armed force to protect the Holy Sepulchre. The Order became so powerful that it took part to the battles for the defence of the Latin States and developed, through a money and goods trade, an efficient bank system used by the European sovereigns. The immense wealth, gained by the Knights, excited feelings of deep envy and thirst of conquest: it was rumoured that Knights practiced alchemy and people started to consider them the cause of the defeat in the crusade. After arrests and condemns to the stake with charges of profanation and zealotry, the Order was suppressed and all goods confiscated: many people believe anyway that the Order has actually never existed. In the Region Marche, the presence of the Knights is documented: near the Guelph army in the battle of Osimo in 1247 or in Castignano, a little town in which each year, in August, is carried out the Templaria Festival. Legend tells about their presence also in the surroundings of Borgo di Lanciano, but the fabulous treasure of the Templars is nowadays still a mystery...
