The Cinque Terre-
Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare: these are,
beginning from La Spezia (whose district they belong since 1926) the villages of Cinque Terre ("Five Lands"), placename used since 15th century to define this territory. Until the end of 14th century, in facts, the area was called "Quattro Terre" ("Four Lands"), being Monterosso excluded from the group.

Riomaggiore
Legend says the village was founded in 8th century a.D. by greek expatriates,
escaped from Leone III's iconoclast fury and arrived on Rio Maior's ("Bigger stream") banks, from where the village's name came. Nowadays the village structure, based on tall houses, small paths and narrow staircases, dates back to the Middle Ages.

Cinque Terre National Park
Founded in october 1999, is crossed by a rich net of footpaths:
excursions winds through an uncontaminated mediterranean vegetation, among holm oaks, strawberry trees, olives, wines, and rare cork oaks, surrounded by dry-walled terraces realised along the centuries. On some paths you can ride a horse or a mountain-bike.
