Careful restoration has transformed this ancient convent into an elegant rural residence, which gives a warm welcome to people longing for a peaceful and comfortable place. Situated on the border between Umbria and Tuscany, Il Biribino is an ideal base to stay and visit the most important historic towns of both regions. |
The farm houses have a very important rural artistic heritage and are joined by many country lanes. The historical importance of Il Biribino farm-house is a testimonial to country life and shown by the fact that even today the feast of threshing is held here. |
The name Il Biribino comes from important historic events passed on by word of mouth or it may refer to places of ancient worship or find its roots in the first civilisation Il Biribino, certainly a most noteworthy farm house, standing on the plains north of the Cittą di Castello. |
The oldest part of the building is the tall square tower with brick moulding. and on the front facade there is a double arched loggia which dates back to 15th century. |
Nearby there are many places of historical importance; the Cittą di Castello, Sansepolcro, Umbertide, Citerna, Pietralunga and Lisciano Niccone.
The upper Tiber valley (or Valtiberina) lies to the east of Tuscany and takes its name from the river which flows through it into the upper corner of Umbria. Valtiberina was not only a border but also a meeting point for different civilisations; the Umbrians and Tuscans, the Byzantines and Longobards. Arezzo's bishops, Rimini's landlords, Rome's Popes and finally Florentines fought for centuries to dominate these mountains and this valley. Roman Augustian patricians discovered its beauty and built their villas here. Then came the period of feuds and abbots who built solid monasteries, whilst many saints discovered hidden places to satisfy their mystic passion. Michelangelo, was born among these mountains and Piero della Francesca, in his home town of Sansepolcro, learnt the secrets of space and light which are expressed in his paintings. |
