Franciacorta: This eminently agricultural land and one welcoming to travellers has succeeded in maintaining its tradition for hard work and a timeless love of nature unaltered. According to reliable historical sources the origin of its name derives from the 'francae curtes', small medieval communities of Benedictine monks exempt from paying taxes on condition that they reclaimed and worked the land entrusted to them. The exact geographical definition of the territory appears in the statute of Doge Francesco Foscari, dated 1429. The territory, part of the highly civilised Republic of Venice had the same boundaries that are recognised today by the ministerial decree for the municipalities producing DOC wines. These wines include sparkling wines that compete with French champagnes and excellent red and white table wines. The area also produces dairy products and ripens cheeses, it mills cereals, makes pasta and processes meats, including ones from outside the territory. Franciacorta is therefore given to new business necessities but also limits its development to maintain an environment on a human scale.
Lake Iseo: The lake is a separate universe from the other scenery of Franciacorta. Here Monte Isola can be reached by ferry-boat from Iseo a holiday centre with composed beauty, many markets and historical findings. Here, far from the traffic and surrounded by greenery, small and ancient hamlets are found, perched on the slopes of the hill. Time has stood still and the ancient native agricultural vocation continues. Along the shore, between the impressive views of stone houses and alleys, the last craftsmen work to make fishing nets and every year the singular religious and folk traditions are re-lived. |
